As many of you will know our school was split across two buildings, with the older children learning in the main building and the younger ones in a building next door that we share with a church. Unfortunately we have had to leave the main building as our lease has ran out and the landlord wants to renovate it and rent it to someone else.
So now all the children are being taught in the church. There are already five classrooms in there which are used by the youngest children. The remaining classes are using the rest of the building which is currently a big open space, and sometimes being taught outside.
We need to partition the other side of the building to add five more classrooms and a small store room, as well as putting clear plastic sheeting into the roof to let in more light. The owner of the building has given us permission to do this work and, while this is not an ideal situation, the modifications will allow the school to remain open.
The building work will cost us around US$645/€590 and we would welcome donations towards the cost. The easiest way to donate is through our Betterplace fundraising page. If you would prefer to transfer money directly to our bank account or send via Western Union etc please contact us.
We wish to complete the work in August while the school is closed for the holidays so if you would like to donate towards this please do so by 1st August as, when money is donated through Betterplace, we have to wait 14 days before they will transfer it to us. Thank you in advance for your support!
In the future we are intending to construct a school of our own where the children will be able to learn in better conditions. Kiuu Sublocation Council (our local council) have recently allocated us an acre of land close to the existing school and we are working on plans for the buildings and calculating a budget with the online assistance of Izabela Brettas Baptista, a volunteer architect in Brazil.
Once the planning work is complete, we will begin to raise money for the construction through grant applications and possibly online fundraising. We will share more information and pictures of the land soon.
