Greenhouse and vegetable garden

Thanks to fundraising by a Brazilian friend of CVC and a grant from the Pollination Project, we have purchased a greenhouse, water tank and irrigation system, and planted vegetables in the greenhouse and in our vegetable garden.

The project is run by women from the CVC savings and loan group, who will grow and sell the vegetables and share the profits with the school. Their part of the profit will be used to give more loans to group members so that they can start and expand small businesses.

Women’s savings group

We have helped a group of 15 women to set up a savings scheme. Each week they all save a small amount of money and, when there is enough, the money is lent to one of the women to help them start or expand a small business. When they pay back the loan the money is lent to another member and the cycle continues. They run a variety of businesses including sewing, beads, hair and beauty salons, and market stalls.

Getting regular paid employment is not easy in Nairobi, especially for refugees who may face discrimination or have limited language skills, so these small businesses make a huge difference to these women and their families.
